Hair by Ramona Eschbach

Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta, the talented young designers behind brand-on-the-rise Eckhaus Latta, avoided referencing any concrete concepts for their Spring/Summer 2015 collection. The design duo focused on textiles treated with rust and interesting cuts that fused creativity with wearability. Lead hairstylist Ramona Eschbach created two looks with rope braids—one down and one up—for the girls and a highly textured look for the guys to complement the clothes. “The hair was inspired by the texture of the clothes, so we wanted something rough and unfinished,” said Eschbach.

There was something that felt a bit like an Army medic or a Girl Scout at the Ostwald Helgason show, even though the notes point to East Germany. Maybe the clash between the scarcity in the region before the toppling of the wall and the longing for beauty there is akin to how a particularly creative woman might do to individualize and feminize her uniform -- adding crocheted embellishments to the collar, and switching drab polos out with glinting thread -- but that's at least what it felt like. Even the color palette, military green and cargo beige to a burnt orange and sky blue, as well as the fabrications, burlap to organza, told this story.

But no matter which story you looked to, there was a heavy utility focus with Velcro straps and oversized pockets amongst them, and a dash of sex appeal with wrap skirts exposing the upper thigh while slashed back seams of button-ups put on a little show. The result was beautiful in a Solange knowledge, quirky type of way. In fact, it seemed she was present there on the runway as a baby blue version of her MET Gala look done in organza flitted amongst the procession.

There's something about a group show that brings out a festive spirit. At VFiles tonight—following a feel-good video message about togetherness from top model Carolyn Murphy—four relatively unknown men's and women's designers from around the world each presented a mini-collection to encouraging hoots and hollers from the audience. The receptive crowd included plenty of colorful downtown stars and Tumblr sensations, as well as enough bold-faced mentors—most notably, Calvin Klein's men's creative director Italo Zucchelli, who was all smiles—to keep the fresh-faced young things giddy with excitement well into the wee hours. Or, however late the VFiles x Def Jam DJ Championship, which doubled as the after-party, raged on. 

The democratic process of allowing designers anywhere to upload pictures and videos of their work to VFiles naturally favors extremes in shapes, colors, and concepts. The first and most promising of the group, Tigran Avestiyan, exhibited these in spades. The graduate of Central Saint Martins in London, who returned to his native Russia to found his label, based his collection on five actual bottles of name-brand fragrances he bought from duty-free stores in airports and fused them together into one unwieldy bottle that his models carried in clear plastic bags. They also wore tunics and shorts with a mishmash of crinkles and flashes of the words "Duty Free"—just enough to suggest cellophane packaging. The designer's message, that of the corruptive, corrosive nature of globalism, came through loud and clear. "It's good to be outside of fashion, seeing it from a distance," he said with a grin backstage, quickly adding, "Not that I wouldn't love to work in New York!" 

Next up was Hye Gin Hamm. Graduating from Parsons earlier this year, she drew inspiration from, she said, "a mix of American and Korean cultures," specifically, American denim and bulky silhouettes evocative of traditional Korean monks. Careful hand-bleaching of each oversized and layered item gave the collection an alluringly timeless, placeless quality. Showings by ZDDZ's Dasha Selyanova, another Russian, and Detto Kazuma of D.TT.K, both of whom produced highly graphic, slightly athletic collections, rounded out the very international showcase. 

Given the excellent IRL platform of VFiles, which is only a year old, it'll be interesting to see how these young hopefuls matriculate through the global fashion system. "It was challenging to choose four designers out of the hundreds who entered," said founder Julie Anne Quay, "but we work closely with our community and mentors [to look] for a point of view, salability, quality, and that's something special."

VFiles Announces the New Group of Designers Showing at Its Spring 2015 NYFW Show

VFiles' New York Fashion Week show is returning this fall with a whole new crop of talent. 

The online fashion community just announced the roster for its spring 2015 show, and it looks like audiences will be treated to collections by talents from around the world. On Sept. 3, Moscow-based Tigran Avetisyan of Tigran and Tokyo-based Detto Kazuma of DTTK, both menswear labels, as well as  New York-based Hygein Hamm of denim label Hamm, and London-based Dasha Selyanova of womenswear label ZDDZ will show their lines in a show that has become a marquee event on the NYFW calendar. The talent was chosen by the VFiles team, with help from Calvin Klein creative director Italo Zucchelli, fashion editor and Vogue editor-at-large Candy Pratts Price, and stylist Mel Ottenberg—industry experts who'll also act as judges and mentors for the program. 

VFiles made its NYFW debut last September, with designers Gypsy Sport, Ammerman Schlösberg, Steven Tai and Sam Mc. In February, it presented its VFILES MADE FASHION 2 show, which introduced Hyein Seo, Melitta Baumeister, and ASSK, who have since been co-signed by Rihanna.

This season menswear designer David Hart took us to Palm Springs with his Spring/Summer 2015 collection. “The inspiration behind the prints is the natural landscape of Palm Springs,” said David. To compliment the colorful tailored clothes, lead hairstylist Kien Hoang created a relaxed yet polished look with lots of shine for the models. “When creating the hair, I imagined European guys on vacation,” said Kien. “They’re super stylish and I wanted the hair to reflect that, but it’s not overly done. It’s also relaxed and easy and quintessentially California.” 

Get the Look:
1. the hair with Foundation Mist, which will serve as a cutting lotion. Clean up the hairline and trim sideburns into a square shape.
2. Apply Gel Sérum and shape the hair with your hands, encouraging natural wave and movement.
3. Blow-dry the hair away from the face. Apply Curl Gloss to enhance natural waves.
4. Finish the look with a generous mist of Shine Light Reflecting Spray for added luster.
