KAELEN | New York Fashion Week | Spring/Summer 2015

Lead Hair Stylist: Amy Friadd for Kate Ryan Inc.

For Kaelen’s tropical-inspired Spring/Summer 2015 collection, hairstylist Amy Farid created a clean and innocent look from the ‘70s with a nod to hair icon Marcia Brady. “We wanted that freshly washed, really brushed hair,” explained Farid. “Like how Marcia Brady would brush her hair 100 times before bed.” Farid also made sure to keep the models’ hair tucked behind their ears. Before the presentation, the hair framing the model’s face would show off a natural bend around the cheekbone. Some models also wore a hair clip with fresh orchids on it.

Get the Look:
1. Create a center part and prep the hair with Foundation Mist. Layer on Volumista Mist for Volume and blow-dry the hair with a round brush, creating natural volume at the root. “Depending on the hair’s texture, we would add Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray and Supershine Moisturizing Cream,” noted Farid.
2. Tuck the hair behind the ears, so that over time the hair gets a natural bend around the cheekbone.
3. Brush the hair with a Mason Pearson brush for a super shiny look.

KAELEN HAWORTH is a Canadian living in and running her eponymous label in New York City. While attending Parsons, The New School for Design, Kaelen interned for Jenni Kayne, Stella McCartney and lingerie brand, The Lake & Stars.

One year after graduating, KAELEN launched with a collection shown during New York Fashion week in 2010. KAELEN strives to create pieces that are at once intelligent, archival and treasured.

In 2014, Kaelen was selected as 1 of 10 designers in the CFDA's {FASHION INCUBATOR} Class 3.0

Her idols include Tilda Swinton, Jeff Bridges and Joan Didion. Point Break, Overboard and The Great Outdoors are some of her favorite movies. She is in love with almost all music, excluding crossover country-pop.

Hairstylist Amy Farid was influenced by Luar Zepol designer Raul Lopez's upbringing in 1980s Williamsburg, Brooklyn, for her high-concept hair look for his Fall/Winter 2014 show. "Raul was really inspired by the boys on the block who would go to the neighborhood salon to get highlights," Amy said. "The idea is that this guy was sitting in the salon getting highlights, then something happened and he had to run out real quick with his frosting cap still on." Amy and her team placed old-school frosting caps on each model's head and pulled the hair through before applying a generous amount of Original Pomade to the strands and spraying the hair with white powder to create the "frosting" effect. Some of the boys with longer hair also got tiny curls in the front, which were set with Superfine Hair Spray. Other models were decorated with hair foils to appear as if they were getting highlights. The overall look was a great fit for this urban luxury line of menswear. (
